New Year Resolutions

Posted by on January 17th, 2017 with 0 Comments

It’s that time of year again where many of us resolve to better ourselves in some way. Some of the top new year resolutions are weight loss or to embark on a new health and fitness journey. Many of us will break these resolutions before the year is out – a third won’t make it to the end of January.  However, it is possible to stick to these resolutions and goals. So this year let’s stop the cycle and try to stick to our health and fitness resolutions.

Lose weight

This is probably the most popular resolution and for many the most difficult to commit too. But you can succeed if you keep your resolutions realistic and achievable – don’t expect overnight success. If you set yourself unrealistic unattainable goals then you will be setting yourself up for failure. Make some basic changes and alterations to your lifestyle – this way you are more likely to stick to your goals.  Keep a food journal to help you keep track of what you eat and have a support system in place.

Reduce stress and worry less.

It is extremely difficult to have a completely stress free lifestyle, but for some people the effects of stress go beyond feelings of anxiety and discomfort.  The stress can leave them feeling emotional and also affect their appetite and leave them feeling ravenously hungry. This then can lead to weight gain which can further lead to more stress. But if stress is chronic, it can increase your risk of—or worsen—insomnia, depression, obesity, heart disease, and more.  Make time to give your body and mind a rest and time to relax.

Research shows that sleep is very important for weight loss. Most people understand a good night’s rest can do wonders for our mood and appearance, but not much is mentioned about the importance of sleep for weight loss and for good health in general.  Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. If you are struggling to lose weight maybe you should have a look at your sleeping habits too.

Reward Yourself.

Once you get closer to reaching your set resolution reward yourself. This doesn’t mean eat junk food or a box of chocolates. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution – a reward that won’t undo your hard work such as;  you could reward yourself with new fitness clothing, choose a weekend getaway or treat yourself to a beauty,  spa treatment.

Be patient.

Be patient with yourself and don’t set yourself unrealistic fitness or weight loss resolutions i.e. to exercise every day, twice a day!  Every so often give your body a rest. Don’t get discouraged with slow progress or setbacks.  Results won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient – plan and prepare and be consistent!  Setbacks are completely fine, and the main thing is you get back on track.

The key to sustainable resolutions is to set small goals and changes gradually and make your New Year resolutions manageable. You will see results if you keep yourself focused and positive!

Good Luck!
