Facial Aesthetics: Botox – Dermal Fillers
Botox for frown reduction Botox is one of the best known and popular non- surgical treatments for treating lines and wrinkles caused by smiling, laughing and frowning. It is used to prevent the muscle contractions that cause furrows and fine lines when the face is in motion.
Clinically trained and experienced doctors carry out the anti- ageing injectable treatment.
Botox is used in an artistic way to restore a relaxed and more youthful appearance to the face, lending a subtle lift to the brows. The treatment is safe and virtually painless and results are visible within 3-7 days, lasting 3-4 months.
How does Botulinum Toxin (Botox)work?
Botulinum toxin blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are relaxed to expression lines. Botulinum Toxin relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression o be unaffected.
Botulinum Toxin injections have been used safely for over twenty years to treat many neurological and ophthalmological disorders. Each year tens of thousands of patients receive Botulinum Toxin for relief from a variety of conditions and it is quickly becoming a popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of aging.
What does treatment involve?
Using a tiny micro needle, a very small amount of Botulinum Toxin is injected very precisely into several locations on the face. The needle is so fine and only a small amount is used, therefore the pain associated with the injection is minimal. No sedation or local anaesthetic is needed.
We advise that following treatment, you can resume normal activities within a few hours. You are able to drive your self home as no anaesthetic is used. We advise that you do not consume alcohol for 24 hours following this treatment and prevent you head from tilting forward for long periods of a time for a few hours following injections.
Some patients experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. In some cases, the toxin can migrate and cause temporary weakness to nearby small muscles. In rare cases there can be drooping of the eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. Your practitioner will discuss this with you in detail before the treatment. Because the effects of Botulinum Toxin are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary, lasting only a few weeks.
What results can I expect?
If dynamic wrinkles make you look older than you are, cosmetic rejuvenation can smooth these out and give you a more youthful appearance. However this treatment cannot improve wrinkles due to aging and sun damaged skin since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions. Botulinum Toxin injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles. The effects of the injections last from 3-6 months. You will need to have injections about 2 – 3 times a year. Early clinical studies indicate that the duration of the treatment benefits is increased over time so you should require fewer injections in the future.
Skin starts to sag and wrinkle naturally with age, as underlying fat and collagen diminishes.
Injecting dermal fillers into the skin plumps it up, makes it firmer and smoothes out lines and wrinkles.
Collagen is a natural protein that is the main constituent of skin, bones, muscles and ligaments. Over time our collagen cells which provide the structural support, resilience and shape to the skin, reduce in number which causes the skin to lose elasticity allowing frown lines and wrinkles to develop.
Collagen replacement using dermal fillers make it possible to temporarily suspend and even reverse the signs of aging. Following treatment, wrinkles are markedly and visibly reduced and lines in the skin, repaired. The suppleness, elasticity and tone of the skin is naturally restored, with immediately visible results.
Dermal Filler Types
Historically, collagen fillers, which were derived from cow hide, have been very popular, these have now been largely replaced by more technologically advanced man made fillers such as Restylane, which are specifically designed for each area enabling the treatment to be administered quickly with very little downtime or recovery time. As these man made fillers are animal free they also require no test prior to treatment.
How are Dermal Fillers applied?
Dermal fillers are injected, usually without local anaesthetic, however a small amount of anaesthetic can be used prior to treatment if requested. Dermal Fillers are injected into lines and wrinkles to plump them out. The dermal filler then remains in the skin where it binds water to produce a lift and give firmness to the treated area.
How long do dermal fillers take?
A dermal filler treatment usually takes around 30 minutes.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Typically, the results of dermal fillers can last 6-9 months but this various from person to person. The filler is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body so the lines, wrinkles or lips will ultimately return to their previous appearance unless top up treatments are given.
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a type of dermal filler. Restylane is the ideal treatment for instantly enhancing your looks. Restylane works from the inside by adding volume to your skin without affecting your natural expression. Restylane is not a beauty cream and it is not surgery – it is an instant beauty lift to enhance your looks.
Only your practitioner can advise whether this treatment is suitable for you.
